Introduced in Minecraft 1.20, smithing templates are items used in smithing tables to apply decorative trims to armor or to upgrade diamond gear to netherite. While they cannot be crafted, they can be found in various structures or duplicated using specific materials.
Where to Find Each Smithing Template
Smithing templates are scattered across different structures in the game. Here's where you can find each one:
Netherite Upgrade – Found in Bastion Remnant treasure rooms, obtained from the main treasure chest (guaranteed 100% chance).

How to Duplicate Smithing Templates
Once you've obtained a smithing template, you can duplicate it using the following crafting recipe:
Ingredients:
- 7 Diamonds
- 1 Block corresponding to the template's material
- 1 Smithing Template
For example, to duplicate a Netherite Upgrade template, you would use:
- 7 Diamonds
- 1 Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
- 1 Netherrack
Here's a list of all the blocks you need to duplicate each of the smithing templates, following the same crafting example as in the previous image.

How to Get a Smithing Table
First, you need a smithing table. There are two ways to get one: crafting one, and finding one in a village.
Crafting a Smithing Table
To craft a Smithing Table, you’ll need:
- 2 Iron Ingots
- 4 Wooden Planks (any type of wood works)

Finding a Smithing Table in Villages
- Smithing Tables naturally generate inside toolsmith houses in villages.
- Breaking it with any tool (even your hand) drops the block.
How to Use Smithing Templates
To apply a smithing template to your armor:
- Place the smithing template in the first slot of the smithing table.

Credits: Captured in-game - Insert the armor piece you wish to customize in the second slot.

Credits: Captured in-game - Add the corresponding material (e.g., copper ingot for a Bolt Armor Trim) in the third slot.

Credits: Captured in-game - Retrieve the newly customized armor piece from the output slot.

This process consumes the smithing template, so ensure you have duplicates if you plan to customize multiple sets of armor.
