Introduced in Minecraft 1.20, smithing templates are items used in smithing tables to apply decorative trims to armor or to upgrade diamond gear to netherite. While they cannot be crafted, they can be found in various structures or duplicated using specific materials.

Where to Find Each Smithing Template

Smithing templates are scattered across different structures in the game. Here's where you can find each one:

  • Netherite Upgrade – Found in Bastion Remnant treasure rooms, obtained from the main treasure chest (guaranteed 100% chance).

An open chest inventory in the Minecraft Nether containing a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, which is used to upgrade Diamond Equipment with a Netherite Ingot.

  • Snout Armor Trim – Located in Bastion Remnants, obtained from standard loot chests (~8.3% chance per chest).

An open chest inventory in Minecraft showing the Snout Armor Trim Smithing Template, which is used to trim armor using Ingots & Crystals, alongside Gold Ingots and other loot.

  • Sentry Armor Trim – Found in Pillager Outposts, obtained from the single loot chest inside the tower (~25% chance).

An open chest inventory in Minecraft at night, showing the Sentry Armor Trim Smithing Template along with a potato and a potion, suggesting loot from a Pillager Outpost.

  • Vex Armor Trim – Located in Woodland Mansions, obtained from any loot chest inside (~50% chance per chest).

An open chest inventory in Minecraft, likely inside a Woodland Mansion, showing the Vex Armor Trim Smithing Template along with bones, gunpowder, and other basic loot.

  • Wild Armor Trim – Found in Jungle Temples, obtained from the hidden loot chest inside (~33.3% chance).

An open chest inventory in a dark area of Minecraft, showing the Wild Armor Trim Smithing Template along with Gold Ingots and bones, suggesting loot from a Jungle Temple.

  • Coast Armor Trim – Located in Shipwrecks, obtained from the “supply” or “treasure” chest (~16.7% chance).

An open chest inventory in a dark, confined space of Minecraft, showing the Coast Armor Trim Smithing Template along with a variety of colored dyes and resources, strongly suggesting loot from a Shipwreck.

  • Dune Armor Trim – Found in Desert Temples, obtained from the four chests under the TNT trap (~14.3% chance per chest).

An open chest inventory in a dark, sandy-colored space of Minecraft, showing the Dune Armor Trim Smithing Template along with leather and bones, strongly suggesting loot from a Desert Temple.

  • Wayfinder Armor Trim – Found in Trail Ruins, obtained by brushing suspicious gravel blocks (~8.3% chance per brush).

  • Shaper Armor Trim – Found in Trail Ruins, obtained by brushing suspicious gravel blocks (~8.3% chance per brush).

How to Duplicate Smithing Templates

Once you've obtained a smithing template, you can duplicate it using the following crafting recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 7 Diamonds
  • 1 Block corresponding to the template's material
  • 1 Smithing Template

For example, to duplicate a Netherite Upgrade template, you would use:

  • 7 Diamonds
  • 1 Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
  • 1 Netherrack

Here's a list of all the blocks you need to duplicate each of the smithing templates, following the same crafting example as in the previous image.

How to Get a Smithing Table

First, you need a smithing table. There are two ways to get one: crafting one, and finding one in a village.

Crafting a Smithing Table

To craft a Smithing Table, you’ll need:

  • 2 Iron Ingots
  • 4 Wooden Planks (any type of wood works)

The Minecraft crafting interface showing the recipe for a Smithing Table, which requires two Iron Ingots placed over four Wooden Planks in a 2x2 pattern.

Finding a Smithing Table in Villages

  • Smithing Tables naturally generate inside toolsmith houses in villages.
  • Breaking it with any tool (even your hand) drops the block.

How to Use Smithing Templates

To apply a smithing template to your armor:

  1. Place the smithing template in the first slot of the smithing table.

The Minecraft Smithing Table interface showing the three slots for upgrading gear, with placeholders for a Smithing Template, the base equipment, and the required material, resulting in the upgraded item.

  2. Insert the armor piece you wish to customize in the second slot.

The Minecraft Smithing Table interface showing a Smithing Template and a piece of Netherite Armor placed in the input slots, ready to be combined with a material to upgrade the gear.

  3. Add the corresponding material (e.g., copper ingot for a Bolt Armor Trim) in the third slot.

The final step of the Minecraft Smithing Table interface, showing a Smithing Template, a Netherite Chestplate, and a Netherite Ingot resulting in an upgraded Netherite Chestplate.

  4. Retrieve the newly customized armor piece from the output slot.

The Minecraft Smithing Table interface showing a Netherite Chestplate in the inventory with a tooltip indicating it has been upgraded with the Bolt Armor Trim and Copper Material, granting +1 Knockback Resistance.

This process consumes the smithing template, so ensure you have duplicates if you plan to customize multiple sets of armor.
